We are operating this course in a manner commonly described as a “closed lab.” Modeled on the science lab experience, I have tried to incorporate elements of experimentation, short exercises, and brief introductions to various concepts that are more fully treated in the text. You should read the text and study it for the exams, but in the lab it will be used as a reference book, sometimes for examples and often for exercises. It is the intention that all of the work for each lab will be completed during the lab period and that there will therefore be no “homework,” but this does not always work out. Individual differences will permit some individuals to work the labs within the allotted time and others will spill over (I will usually give you until noon for full credit). You have until 8 am. the following day to turn the lab in for 80% credit. If you finish the lab early you should also answer the log questions and you might well review what the lab focused on and compare it to the text, noting what was skipped. You are advised to exercise the code that comes on your CD and to experiment further with the IDE or with the references on the book’s website. Consider that a thorough understanding of the concepts introduced by the lab make up the minimum that you want to learn in the course.
